Smoke smell in carpet: first aid now, and what actually gets it out
Do not try to treat this yourself — the products that work need neutralizing afterwards and the wrong ones make it permanent. Blot, keep it dry, and call. Success depends on the fiber: 0 of 5 common carpet fibers rate high, 5 medium — see the table.
Do this now
Ventilate hard for a day; then keep the A/C running.
Vacuum every fabric surface slowly with a HEPA vacuum.
Wipe hard surfaces and baseboards with a degreasing cleaner — a lot of the smell is on walls, not carpet.
Change the AC filter. If the smell is mostly gone, a professional carpet clean will finish it; if it isn't, the pad and drywall are holding it.
Don't do this
Fragrance sprays, carpet powders and plug-ins; they add a smell on top.
Steam-cleaning without an alkaline pre-spray; it just wets the tar film.
Sealing the room up; the film keeps off-gassing.
Why it works (and why the usual advice doesn't)
Tobacco smoke leaves a sticky, oily film of tar and nicotine on every fiber, plus an odor that has soaked into the pad and the drywall. The film is what keeps releasing the smell, so it has to be removed with an alkaline cleaner, not covered with fragrance. After the film is gone, remaining odor in the pad and walls is a gas-phase problem treated with oxidizing equipment — hydroxyl or ozone generators — in an empty house. Fire smoke is a different, larger job and belongs with a restoration contractor.
Will it come out? Depends on the fiber
The same smoke smell in carpet behaves differently on each carpet fiber. Flip a corner or check the closet remnant — the fiber is usually printed on the backing label.

High = normally removed fully. Medium = usually removed, some risk of a faint ghost. Low = partial at best. Permanent = dye or fiber damage; repair options only.
What we do when you call
Alkaline pre-spray to emulsify the tar and nicotine film, agitation, and hot-water extraction with a clear rinse, on carpet and upholstery. Then, for odor that remains in the pad and walls, a hydroxyl or ozone treatment with the house unoccupied, which oxidizes the odor molecules rather than covering them. Heavy, long-term smoker homes sometimes need the pad replaced and the walls sealed and painted; we say so after the first treatment rather than promising up front.
