Blood stains: first aid now, and what actually gets it out
Act in the first minutes. Fresh, it usually comes out fully; once it dries it bonds to the fiber and becomes a professional spotting job with a lower success rate. Success depends on the fiber: 4 of 5 common carpet fibers rate high, 1 medium — see the table.
Do this now
Blot fresh blood with a dry white towel; don't press hard.
Dab repeatedly with cold water — as cold as the tap goes — blotting between passes until the towel stops picking up color.
Cold water with a drop of dish soap for what's left; blot; rinse.
For a brown shadow on synthetic carpet, dab 3% hydrogen peroxide on a white cloth, wait a minute, blot, rinse. Test on a hidden spot first. Never on wool.
Don't do this
Warm or hot water — it cooks the protein into the fiber.
Peroxide on wool or on dark carpet without testing; it can bleach.
Rubbing, which spreads a small spot into a large stain.
Why it works (and why the usual advice doesn't)
Blood is protein plus iron. Protein coagulates with heat — the same thing that happens when an egg cooks — so anything warm sets it into the fiber permanently. Cold water dissolves fresh blood almost completely. Dried blood needs an enzyme to digest the protein on synthetic carpet, and on wool, which is itself a protein fiber that enzymes would also digest, it needs a cool neutral treatment instead. The brown that remains on old blood is oxidized iron and responds to a mild oxidizer on synthetics.
Will it come out? Depends on the fiber
The same blood stains behaves differently on each carpet fiber. Flip a corner or check the closet remnant — the fiber is usually printed on the backing label.

High = normally removed fully. Medium = usually removed, some risk of a faint ghost. Low = partial at best. Permanent = dye or fiber damage; repair options only.
What we do when you call
Cold-water flush first, then a protein (enzyme) spotter on synthetic fiber with dwell time, and extraction. Dried blood is softened first; the oxidized iron residue is treated with a mild oxidizer on synthetics. On wool we use a cool, pH-neutral protein solution — enzymes and oxidizers would damage the fiber — which removes most and can leave a faint mark on old spots. Large-volume or biohazard cleanup is referred to a specialist.
