Nail polish on carpet: first aid now, and what actually gets it out
Act in the first minutes. Fresh, it usually comes out fully; once it dries it bonds to the fiber and becomes a professional spotting job with a lower success rate. Success depends on the fiber: 0 of 5 common carpet fibers rate high, 4 medium, 1 low — see the table.
Do this now
If it's wet, blot up the excess with a dry cloth without spreading it. If it's dry, gently scrape any raised film.
Test non-acetone nail polish remover on a hidden spot. Then dab it on a white cloth and press onto the polish, lifting from the edges in.
Repeat with clean cloth areas until no more color transfers.
Rinse with dish soap and cool water, blot, dry.
Don't do this
Acetone poured on the carpet; it can dissolve the backing adhesive and some fibers.
Hairspray or vinegar — neither dissolves lacquer.
Rubbing, which spreads a dot into a smear.
Why it works (and why the usual advice doesn't)
Nail polish is nitrocellulose lacquer with pigment and plasticizers. It dries into a hard film that only a solvent can soften. Acetone dissolves it fastest but also dissolves acetate fibers and can attack the latex in carpet backing, so non-acetone remover is the safer home option. Once the lacquer is softened and lifted, the pigment behaves like any other — nylon and wool can hold a tint, polyester and olefin usually release it.
Will it come out? Depends on the fiber
The same nail polish on carpet behaves differently on each carpet fiber. Flip a corner or check the closet remnant — the fiber is usually printed on the backing label.

What we do when you call
A lacquer-appropriate dry solvent applied to an absorbent pad and worked through the spot, repeated until the film is gone, then extraction. Remaining pigment on nylon or wool is treated with a reducing or oxidizing agent chosen by color and tested on the carpet's own dye first. Dark reds and blues on light nylon are the hardest and sometimes leave a faint shadow.
